An ambulance rushing a dying man to hospital in an outlying suburb of the capital lost control and hit and killed his elder brother, district police said on Saturday by telephone.
Police said that the family tragedy began when Khut Vit (34) was shot by unknown assailants as he rode his motorbike home at about midnight shortly after leaving a beer garden on Friday night.
His brother, Khut Suo (38), called an ambulance to rush his badly wounded brother to hospital, but the ambulance sped the wrong way to make a U-turn, and when it raced back past Khut Suo the driver accidentally ran the elder brother down.
”The ambulance hit Khut Suo and killed him because it was urgently racing his younger brother to the hospital, and the driver lost control,” Mean Chey district police chief Kuy Noul said.
Khut Suo died instantly. His wounded brother, Khut Vit, who was a clerk of the court at Phnom Penh Municipal Court, was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
Police said they had no motive for the shooting and were unable to say whether the delay caused by running the elder brother down contributed to the younger brother’s death. — Sapa-DPA
