Rural disasters

Thank you so much for the important story in your April edition about the contraceptive injections being given to young girls in schools in the North West province (Girl-learners’ reproductive rights outrage).

This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as difficulties experienced by poor people in rural areas go. Services and rights, such as

education, health, home affairs, social services, housing, communication and transport, are also lacking.

I am sure that the problems poor people have in this rural area are shared by many throughout the country. It seems to call for a Department of Rural Affairs to coordinate the needs of people in rural areas. The distances make it all so much more difficult.
