The number of cases of typhoid in Delmas has increased to 594, a Mpumalanga government spokesperson said on Monday.
The total number of people with diarrhoea has risen to 3 303 since the typhoid outbreak in the town on August 22, said Lebona Mosia.
”Everything is under control. The daily number of people infected is actually dropping,” he said.
Reporters were told last week the outbreak was caused by human waste in a borehole.
Vusi Kubheka, a bacteria specialist, said Salmonella typhi, the bacteria that causes typhoid, was found in borehole A4 in the area.
The source of the bacteria was uncertain.
The provincial government said the water supply from all boreholes after treatment is fit for drinking, as measured by the residual chlorine values recorded by the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
It said no water from any source other than tap water should be used without treatment.
