Boxing legend Hearns charged with assault

Former seven-time world champion Thomas ”Hit Man” Hearns was charged with assault after police responded to an incident at his home involving his 13-year-old son.

The 47-year-old Hearns is expected to appear in court on Friday for a preliminary hearing in front of a judge, the Detroit Free Press reported on Tuesday.

Police charged Hearns with misdemeanor assault and battery following the incident which occured on Sunday.

He was released on $10 000 bond on Monday and ordered to have no contact with his son.

Police went to Hearn’s Detroit-area home on Sunday after being called by Hearns’ wife. The boy suffered minor injuries, including a black eye, and was treated at the scene.

After a five-year hiatus, Hearns returned to the ring in July where he defeated unheralded John Long in a bout which was stopped by the ref in the eighth round. – Sapa-AFP
