Helen Suzman undergoes surgery after fall

Helen Suzman, a former Member of Parliament and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, was hospitalised after she fell and hurt her hip at her home in Illovo, Johannesburg, media reports said on Wednesday.

The 88-year-old veteran anti-apartheid activist was reported to be ”groggy” after undergoing surgery on Monday.

She was taken to Milpark Hospital on Sunday after her domestic worker found her on her bedroom floor.

Although Suzman was being held in the hospital’s coronary care unit, her daughter, Patricia, said this was as a precautionary measure.

She stressed that her mother’s condition was not life-threatening and that she would probably stay in the unit for between five days and a week.

Suzman’s daughter was not yet sure what caused her mother to fall as she was still being treated with powerful medication, which limited her ability to communicate. – Sapa
