Congratulations to the Teacher on walking for 10 years now — this is a baby that grew up fast! We need papers like yours if education is to play the central role that it should in South Africa’s growth and development. You not only cast a critical eye on the shortcomings and problems in our schools and other institutions, but you stimulate a debate about what should be done. This open discussion is rooted in a desire for support and constructive intervention, to help improve and play a part in the reconstruction of education.
the Teacher has also correctly identified our educators as the key resource that needs to be supported and built.
Congratulations to the Teacher on being part of the essential involvement of all sectors of civil society, to work alongside the government in giving our children the education and future they deserve. — Graeme Bloch, education policy analyst, Development Bank of Southern Africa
Well done! Ten years gone, many lifetimes more to go. May the Teacher live way beyond its teenage years to become an established tradition of critical thinking about education, giving analysis and direction on key issues of the day, being a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration and a touchstone for active, practical thinking about how to make classrooms places of learning for all. — Linda Chisholm, Human Sciences Research Council and the University of KwaZulu-Natal
Congratulations to the Teacher on 10 years of success in the education environment! Thanks for the contribution that you make in raising the awareness of issues in the education sector and highlighting the work of many wonderful teachers throughout South Africa. Many happy returns — we look forward to seeing you around in 10 years’ time! — Catholic Institute of Education
Happy 10th Birthday! We’re grateful that you’ve been such an invaluable voice for education and teachers. The year 2006 brings the Global Campaign for Education closer to the Teacher — a few months ago we opened our first international office and we based ourselves in South Africa. Our new home in Johannesburg is the engine room from which we drive a campaign in over 112 countries — we’re putting pressure on governments and international institutions to keep their Education for All promises and make sure every person has the free quality education that they deserve, and is their right.
‘Every child needs a teacher” is our slogan this year. Teachers are the lifeblood of any education system — a school place, books and classrooms are useless without a teacher. Teachers shape the minds of the future. Worldwide, we need 18 million more teachers (and most of these in Africa). So, not only are we congratulating the Teacher for reaching 10 years, but we are welcoming the next 10 years to come. the Teacher helps bring to light the real issues that schools and teachers face. This insight is invaluable for really improving education systems and campaigning for good quality education for all. We need your voice, congratulations and keep up the good work. —Alex Kent, campaigns and communications coordinator, Global Campaign for Education
