Shoprite worker arrested for intimidation

A striking Shoprite employee has appeared in court after he and other strikers allegedly intimidated a 30-year-old woman in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said Zukisani Mboxwana made a brief appearance at the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday after he and several other strikers had intimidated a woman who had just bought meat from a restaurant in Butterworth on Tuesday night.

”The woman had just bought herself two pieces of meat when the strikers approached her. Mboxwana and the strikers snatched the meat from her and threw it on the ground,” said Manatha.

The restaurant had no connection with the supermarket, which is about a kilometre away, Manatha said.

The woman reported the matter to the police and Mboxwana was arrested.

Mboxwana was released on R500 bail, and his case was postponed to September 13.

In another incident, a striking Butterworth Shoprite employee allegedly forced a 19-year-old woman to drink cooking oil on Monday. The striker was arrested and charged with intimidation.
