Caddies at the world Amateur Team Golf Championships, being played at Stellenbosch, went on strike on Saturday morning over a pay dispute.
Chairperson of the Caddy Institute of South Africa Barry Stemmet said that play had got under way, but that the players — of which there were just over 200 from 45 countries — were being given golf carts instead of caddies.
”It inconveniences players a lot because the cars can’t give the players the correct club and assist with the overall game,” he said.
He said the caddies were complaining that they received only a portion of an amount of $250 that players had paid for caddying fees.
The championship is being played at the De Zalze course outside Stellenbosch.
The International Golf Federationdeclined to comment, saying they might issue a statement later on Saturday.
Canada was leading in the tournament at the end of Friday, the second day of the tournament, ahead of the United States, Mexico and The Netherlands.
The championship ends on Sunday. – Sapa
