Third cash depot hit in three months

Robbers have targeted yet another Coin Security cash depot — the third robbed in as many months, the Sowetan reported on Tuesday.

A gang of 14 to 16 robbers — one in police uniform and another dressed as a security guard — struck at the company’s Witbank depot at 10am on Sunday morning, Superintendent Izak Van Zyl told the newspaper.

They claimed they were there to investigate a previous robbery, but once inside, produced firearms, held staff hostage and emptied the safe, apparently taking R7-million.

Van Zyl said a man was in custody for questioning, but that no charges had been laid.

Coin’s West Rand depot was recently robbed of R30-million when a gang damaged the alarm system, entered the building and drugged a guard on duty.

Its Modderfontein depot was attacked a month ago by robbers posing as security guards, who stole R50-million. They entered the premises in a security vehicle they had ambushed earlier in the day. – Sapa
