Taxi industry to strike next week

The leadership of the National Taxi Alliance (NTA) is to call for a strike against the taxi recapitalisation programme, the Cape Times reported on Wednesday.

Its website quoted a top industry source as saying the week-long strike from Monday would be announced on Thursday.

This could leave tens of thousands of workers, pupils and students in major cities stranded.

The source said the strike would accompany planned court action by the NTA to challenge the legality of the government’s recapitalisation programme.

Earlier this month, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) said taxi operators would be more supportive of the programme if they understood that it would benefit their market.

”Recapitalisation is not essentially aimed at benefiting taxi operators, but rather at the commuter and securing his or her safety and comfort,” said council secretary general Philip Taaibosch.

He said the council Santaco would rather fight for the industry in ”a civil manner in the boardroom” than take to the streets ”regardless of consequence”. – Sapa
