In a somewhat disappointing opening affair, the Wildebeest claimed the points in their first outing in the Vodacom Cup rugby series with a 24-16 victory over the Boland Cavaliers at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Friday night. The home side led 10-6 after the first 40 minutes.
Considering the powerful unit fielded by the Wildebeest, they never got into top gear against a more-than-willing Boland unit.
The try count was three to one in the end, with centre Andries Strauss, who also kicked three conversions and a penalty goal, eighthman Guthrie Hall and flyhalf Riaan Swanepoel scoring for the Wildebeest. Wing Alvin Hugo had a last-gasp effort seconds from the end.
Flyhalf Jacques Schutte converted the try and kicked three out of three with his penalty goals. — Sapa
