Mozambican authorities were making arrangements on Tuesday for a number of children who were severely injured and traumatised in the recent explosions at a Maputo armoury to travel to South Africa for further treatment.
Joao Tembe, the administrative director of Maputo Central Hospital, confirmed on Tuesday in a brief interview that some children would be going to receive treatment in South Africa, Vista News reported.
”Now we are busy arranging travel documents for the children and we will only know by tomorrow [Wednesday] how many would be transferred to South Africa,” he said.
Tembe could not reveal where in South Africa the children would be hospitalised.
”We will give you the chance to see and speak to some of the children before they go and we will then tell you which part of South Africa they are going to,” said Tembe when pressed to answer a question.
According to official media reports, 46 blast victims remained in the hospital’s intensive-care unit.
Official figures say 101 people were killed and more than 500 were injured in the blasts at the country’s main military armoury.
Government critics have blamed the blasts, which occurred for the third time since 1985, on ”negligence”.
Meanwhile, a commission of inquiry led by prominent lawyers was appointed to investigate the cause of the blasts and present its report within two weeks. — Sapa
