Aid boost for Somalia

Germany is to provide an additional â,¬1,5-million to humanitarian organisations working in Somalia, the Foreign Ministry said in Berlin on Friday.

The Foreign Office said the move was in response to recent developments in Mogadishu, described as ”cause for concern.” The Red Cross will receive â,¬1-million and a German disaster aid agency the remainder.

”We want to make a contribution to alleviating at least to some extent the difficult situation faced by the people in Somalia,” German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

”This will only be successful if the violence comes to an end,” Steinmeier said, calling on the parties involved in the conflict to uphold international humanitarian law and to desist from obstructing humanitarian aid.

Germany has provided â,¬4-million in humanitarian aid since the beginning of the year, as well as an additional â,¬750 000 to help refugees in Somalia’s neighbouring countries, Kenya and Ethiopia. — Sapa-dpa
