Reitz protesters disrupt traffic, throw stones

Residents of Pepsana at Reitz in the eastern Free State blocked roads with burning tyres and stones on Tuesday in a protest over municipal service delivery, police said.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said the protesters had stopped all traffic in and out of the township since 4am on Tuesday.

”It is a very large crowd, seemingly the whole township, and they are throwing stones at police vehicles,” said Mophiring.

The protest action has disrupted all schooling and services in Pepsana.

Mophiring said the protests were apparently linked to service-delivery issues.

Protesters complained that the mayor of the Nketoana municipality had not reacted to service-delivery concerns contained in a memorandum that was handed over about a week ago.
