The National Assembly’s communications committee has shortlisted 37 candidates it plans to interview for a position on the 12-member South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board.
The interviews are expected to be held next week, following which a final shortlist will be compiled.
The committee will then make its recommendation for consideration by the National Assembly, and approval by President Thabo Mbeki.
The new board should assume duties from January 2008.
Only five of the 37 names are on all three lists proposed so far by the African National Congress, Democratic Alliance and Inkatha Freedom Party.
They are Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) CEO Lumke Mtimde, former MDDA CEO Libby Lloyd, advertising executive Peter Vundla, corporate businessman Isaac Shongwe and existing SABC board member Alison Gilwald.
Other existing board members on the shortlist are chairperson Eddie Funde, deputy chairperson Christine Qunta, Andile Mbeki, Cecil Msomi, Ashwin Trikamjee, Fadila Lagadien and Khanyisiwe Mkhonza.
Other shortlisted candidates include Neren Rau of the South African Reserve Bank, lawyer Michael Judin, film producer Paul Raleigh, former SABC journalist Pippa Green, former National Assembly speaker Frene Ginwala, advocate Nomazotsho Memani-Balani of the Commission for Gender Equality, Adam Habib of the Human Sciences Research Council and Pansy Tlakula of the Independent Electoral Commission.
