Khutsong sinkhole house vandalised

A three-bedroom house that caved in as result of sinkholes in Khutsong near Carletonville on Friday has been vandalised.

Joseph Ramorola, family spokesperson, said on Monday that the house was vandalised on Saturday night.

”Window frames and curtains have been stolen,” he said. ”We are not sure what else has been taken from the house because we are afraid of going inside in light of the situation.”

He said he had been guarding the house since Sunday night and intended to remove some furniture once geologists gave the go ahead to enter the house.

”I could not understand why people risked their lives and entered the house”.

He said the incident was not reported to the police.

The Ramorolas were relocated to a temporary accommodation after municipal engineers found out that their house was in the danger of sinking.

Recalling the incidents leading to their relocation, he said the house started to crack and when municipal engineers inspected it, they informed them that the house was at risk and they should move out.

The family spent R350 000 to build the house after buying the stand in 1999. The house was not insured, he said.

Spokesperson for the Merafong municipality Seabo Gaeganelwa said the area around the house remained unsafe and that rain was compounding the problem.

”Geologists still maintain that residents should be moved to safe land,” he said.

”The area has been condoned off, but that is not enough to stop children from moving in to satisfy their curiosity … the potential loss of human life is a possibility which has to be averted.” — Sapa
