McBride case only in court next year

Ekhurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride has had his drunk-driving trial postponed to March 17 next year, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Thursday.

NPA spokesperson Tlali Tlali said the reason for the postponement was apparently because the defence wanted to get another legal representative on its team.

Earlier, South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported that McBride’s defence counsel wanted Kemp J Kemp to head the defence team, but he would only be available next year.

”We wish to emphasise that the state was ready to proceed. We are really not impressed [with the postponement]. We had witnesses lined up,” said Tlali.

McBride is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, defeating the ends of justice and fraud. The charges relate to the car accident he was involved in near Centurion in December last year.
