Get out the umbrellas for Christmas

Santa Claus will have to slide down slippery chimneys on Christmas Day as thunderstorms are expected in most parts of South Africa on Tuesday.

Rain and thunderstorms across several parts of the country have been predicted by the South African Weather Service.

Spokesperson Louis Fernandes said on Monday that many regions have a 60% chance of storms and thunderstorms on Christmas Day.

Scattered thundershowers are expected to affect North West, Free State, eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, southern Mpumalanga and Gauteng.

”The eastern parts of the country such as Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the western interior have a 30% chance,” he said. ”Sunny skies are expected in Limpopo and [on] the west coast.”

It will remain cloudy and cool along the Eastern Cape coastal belt and in KwaZulu-Natal, while the rest of the country will be warm to hot, with the exception of the south coast of the Western Cape where it is likely to be cool.

Cape Town can expect a maximum temperature of 25 degrees on Christmas Day, while Johannesburg will reach 28, Pretoria 30 and Durban also 30.

On Monday, heavy falls of rain were expected in places over the Eastern Cape and in the Karoo.
