Dozens killed in Uganda boat crash

Ugandan marine police have found 30 bodies in Lake Victoria in eastern Uganda after two boats collided earlier this week, police said on Thursday.

”We have called off the operations after recovering 30 bodies from the lake,” said Christopher Kubayi, regional police commander in eastern Uganda.

”A team continues to investigate the cause of the accident and a report will be made public when ready,” Kubayi said.

A cargo boat and a passenger ship carrying at least 42 people crashed into each other on Monday, police said.

The passenger boat was carrying fish traders who operate around the lake that straddles Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The cargo ship had 2,5 tonnes of fish aboard, police said.

Accidents caused by overcrowding, inadequate safety precautions or stormy weather are common on Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest lake. Last year, 39 people drowned in the same area. — Reuters
