Security guard Richard Engelbrecht was on Wednesday given two life sentences — one for the rape of Mitchells Plain schoolgirl Annestacia Wiese and the second for murdering her by strangulation.
He was also sentenced to ten years imprisonment for indecently assaulting his three-year-old stepdaughter two years previously.
He appeared before acting judge Richard Brusser, who told him: ”Mr Engelbrecht, you are an evil man.”
The judge said he would order that the court record follow Engelbrecht wherever he might be, to ensure that he was not released after serving 25 years — as is normal practice.
Engelbrecht’s defence rested on ”temporary, non-pathological criminal incapacity” due to his abuse of the drug tik prior to the rape and murder.
Brusser had twice during the trial refused to refer Engelbrecht for psychiatric assessment, and at Tuesday’s proceedings he added: ”The court cannot refer an accused for psychiatric evaluation simply because he consumed a few grams of some substance.” – Sapa
