Protesters barricade Durban township

Scrap cars, fridges and burning tyres were used to barricade several Durban roads on Monday as about 500 residents demanded that a local ward councillor leave the area.

The residents are demanding that an African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor leave his office and move out of the area as he had ”not kept his word on service delivery”.

”We do not want him here. He lied to us and we want him to leave our area,” protestor Eddie Malaza said.

”He made a lot of promises before the by-election and never kept his word. He must go or we will make him leave,” he said.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the residents had barricaded all entry and exit points into the Klaarwater area from 6am.

”They blocked the roads and prevented taxis from entering and leaving the township,” he said.

Mdunge said the crowd then marched to an ANC office and demanded that the ward councillor leave his office.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Thomas Tyala said that he could not comment on the matter as it involved an ANC councillor.

He referred all queries to city manager Mike Sutcliffe. Sutcliffe was not immediately available for comment.

Dozens of police officers were deployed at the scene but no arrests had been made. No injuries were reported. — Sapa
