A national task team to urgently achieve the reductions required to reduce load-shedding and to achieve targeted power savings has been established, power utility Eskom said on Friday.
This was done during Friday’s briefing set up by the government to help manage the energy emergency.
The task team comprises chief executives of the largest municipalities and Eskom’s chief executive, Jacob Maroga.
Eskom said the team had agreed to work together to achieve rapid energy savings, favouring opportunities for load-reduction versus load-shedding.
Among others who attended the session were Minister of Public Enterprises Alec Erwin, Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwa Sonjica, Eskom chairperson Valli Moosa and senior local authorities.
All parties agreed that load-shedding was not the preferred option to achieving energy savings.
”Delegates were positive and showed commitment to achieving load-reductions through a range of management techniques and innovative application of new technologies,” said Eskom.
The company said it was positive that load-reduction would be achieved over time through joint action with municipalities. — Sapa
