Judge grants ‘final postponement’ in Kebble trial

The murder trial of mining boss Brett Kebble was postponed until July 26 in the South Gauteng High Court on Wednesday.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the court that the postponement was necessary because of a delay in former police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi’s corruption trial.

The Selebi trial was postponed on Monday until March 1 to allow State Security Minister Siyabonga Cwele to petition the Constitutional Court. Cwele and the State Security Agency are attempting to keep former intelligence coordinator Barry Gilder out of the witness box.

Nel said him and his prosecutions team are also involved in the Selebi matter and the only person accused of Kebble’s murder, convicted drug-dealer Glenn Agliotti, was a state witness in that trial.

Judge Frans Kgomo granted the ‘final postponement” and also agreed to alter Agliotti’s bail conditions. His bail was reduced from R350 000 to R200 000 on condition that the R150 000 would be used to pay Agliotti’s legal fees.

Agliotti may also travel abroad with the prior written approval of investigating officer Andrew Leask.
