Simple investing for foreigners

A reader asks: Can a foreign investor open an account to trade on the JSE?

Maya replies: It is very easy for a foreigner to open a stockbroking account in South Africa. Nick Kunze, head of dealing at BJM Private Clients, says it is as simple as opening a non-resident account, and one does not even have to provide proof of address. As the funds are registered to a non-resident, there are no problems repatriating the money back overseas. However, not all stockbrokers offer non-resident accounts so you will need to make some enquiries.
