A carnival mood took over the Nelson Mandela Bridge in central Johannesburg on Friday as the city’s first citizen, mayor Amos Masondo, opened the newly decorated structure.
“In Paris they have the Eiffel Tower, in New York the Statue of Liberty, and South Africa has the Mandela Bridge.”
As Masondo cut a ribbon, two large banners — bearing the image of beaming former president Mandela with the World Cup trophy in his hands — dropped down to mark the symbolic opening of the bridge ahead of the World Cup next week.
“Today we are a mere six days to the World Cup … This is the last soccer Friday before kick-off.
“You’ll agree with me that the Mandela Bridge is a historic site. The bridge is a symbol of a new Johannesburg,” said Masondo.
The sides of the bridge were draped with a large colourful banner while various flags depicting people celebrating were on display.
“We call on residents of South Africa to open their hearts and give a warm embrace to our visitors.”
“Everyone will feel welcome when walking over this bridge,” Masondo said.
Local organising committee spokesperson Richard Mkhondo said the unveiling of the decorated bridge marked the final chapter in World Cup preparations.
“When you drive around the city you must feel that the World Cup is here,” he said. — Sapa
