Cape art pick: December 17 2010

Now in its 19th year, Cape Town art consultant and curator, Rose Korber’s annual Art Salon remains a highlight on the Cape Town art calendar.

Tapping into the prestige and fanfare surrounding Paris’ legendary 18th century art salons, the soirée aims to present a ‘state of the South African art scene”. Paintings, original prints, photography, sculpture and ceramics by more than fifty of South Africa’s biggest names, including William Kentridge, Willie Bester, Robert Hodgins, Diana Victor, Claudette Schreuders and more, are on view. Shaking things up is Salon Des Confuses, a show within a show, curated by Andrew Lamprecht. Like the Salon des Refusés of 1863, which challenged the censor of the old garde at the official Paris Salon, the exhibition features a mix of younger, emerging artists. Georgina Gratrix, Stuart Bird, Ian Grose, Unathi Sigenu, ceramicist William Martin, and photographer Rose Kotze are amongst the young guns presenting ‘unusual, unexpected and surprising” works. Lamprecht hosts a walkabout of the exhibition on December 18 at 11am.

Rose Korber Art, 48 Sedgemoor Road, Camps Bay, Cape Town. Until January 17, 2011.
