NUM, Lonmin reach wage settlement

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and platinum producer Lonmin have reached a wage agreement after protracted talks.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and platinum producer Lonmin have reached a wage agreement after protracted talks, a union spokesperson said on Wednesday.

“The agreement was reached yesterday [Tuesday] after many months of engagement, which saw the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration intervening in the dispute,” said Lesiba Seshoka in a statement.

The NUM represents more than12 000 workers at Lonmin.

The parties agreed to an 8% wage increase backdated to October 1 2010 and a one-off bonus of R850.

The NUM originally demanded a 12% wage increase, while Lonmin offered 7%. — Sapa
