Department of home affairs offices across the country will be open to provide services on election day, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
This would enable the public to obtain documents, allowing them participation in the local government elections scheduled for Wednesday, spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said.
Home affairs offices will be open from 7am to 7pm, to coincide with voting times.
“Critical however, is the need for the department of home affairs to ensure those wishing to participate and exercise their democratic right to vote, do so without any hindrance in respect of the issuance of identity documents,” Mamoepa said.
“Accordingly, the department has increased its printing capacity through Government Printing Works to meet the increased demand for IDs. These IDs are being delivered to all offices of application on a daily basis.”
Mobile units will be available in those areas where the department does not have a physical presence.
The mobile units were fitted with the capacity to issue temporary identity certificates for those without permanent IDs, he said. — Sapa
