Everything from jazz to classical to MOR rock is on the menu this week.
? Jazz greats will gather this weekend for a double show at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City Casino. The line-up features Grammy Award-winner and veteran American jazz master Yusef Lateef. The multi-instrumentalist and exponent of autophysiopsychic music (no kidding) is joined by veteran bassist Rufus Reid, Sibongile Khumalo and Pu2ma. Accompanying this distinguished line-up will be a 45-piece band.

? If you are in Sandton at lunchtime on a Friday, R30 gets you into the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square’s Lunch Hour Classical Concerts. The new season kicks off this week and is devoted to chamber music. It coincides with the third symphony season of the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra. On July 22 hear the group, In Cinq, with Ginger Neff (violin), Andrea Erasmus (viola), Martie Botha (viola), Sonja Bass (cello) and Morné van Heerden (clarinet). On July 29 hear the Goldberg Chamber Players playing the Brahms Piano Quintet.

? This Saturday Jo’burg blues-rockers Shadowclub will take to the stage at Kitchener’s in Braamfontein. This will be the band’s first live show since they launched their debut album, Guns and Money. The work was produced and mixed by Matthew Fink of Jim Neversink and Black Hotels fame and mastered by Brian Lucey, the man behind the Black Keys’ recent smash album, Brothers. Guns and Money is a high-energy slab of dirty, sexy rock ‘n roll. Joining them at Kitchener’s will be all-female rock band Cortina Whiplash. The gig starts at 9pm. A second Shadowclub gig has been lined up for July 28 at the Bohemian where they will be taking to the stage with support from impressive Cape Town blues band and Just Music label mates Machineri. Also on the bill are Dead Alphabet and Planet Joy. The gig starts at 9pm and R50 gets you in.

? Top rock band Prime Circle headlines this weekend’s Old Mutual Music in the Gardens concert at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. On July 24 catch these South African Music Award winners. The botanical gardens provide an ideal picnic place, weather permitting. Prime Circle won an MK award for Best International Breakthrough this year. The award is aligned to the youth music channel MKtv.
