Cabinet approves waste strategy

Cabinet has approved the national waste management strategy for implementation, government spokesperson Jimmy Manyi said on Thursday.

The strategy had eight key goals, including promoting waste minimisation, re-use, recycling, and recovery of waste, he told a media briefing following Cabinet’s regular Wednesday meeting.

It further aimed to ensuring effective and efficient delivery of waste services, and growing the contribution of the waste sector to the green economy.

Also, to ensure that people were aware of the impact of waste on their health, wellbeing and the environment, to achieve integrated waste management planning and to ensure sound budgeting and financial management for waste services.

It also sought to providing measures to rehabilitate contaminated land, and establish effective compliance with and enforcement of the Waste Act.

“An action plan that sets out how to meet the goals and targets is part of the strategy, and the actions include roles and responsibilities for different spheres of government, industry, and civil society,” Manyi said. — Sapa
