Eligible voters have until the official proclamation of the election date to register, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said on Friday.
"The electoral commission would like to remind all … that today's announcement of the date of the election does not constitute the official proclamation of the election date," said spokesperson Kate Bapela.
"Voter registration will thus continue until the date of the official proclamation of the election date."
Earlier, President Jacob Zuma announced that the fifth national general elections will be held on May 7.
Bapela said the proclamation of the date was expected some time this month.
Once the proclamation was published, the IEC would send out an election timetable. The timetable would give deadlines for submissions of candidate lists by political parties and applications for special votes, among others.
After consultation with political parties in the national party liaison committee, the IEC would publish the full election timetable in the Government Gazette, Bapela said. – Sapa
