Rhodes University students dies in fire

PORT ELIZABETH, June 2 (ANA) – Grahamstown police in the Eastern Cape have opened an inquest docket following the death of a Rhodes University student.

The student, whose name has not yet been released, was reportedly caught up in a fire at a student digs during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the man, in his early twenties, shared the house in Milner Street, with several other people.

The fire reportedly started in the kitchen which was directly adjacent to the student’s room.

He reportedly could not escape due to burglar bars attached to the windows.

Govender said that his housemates had managed to make it out of the house safely. The house was completely gutted during the blaze.
