Candidates seeking to become Japan’s next prime minister have laid out their policies in a bid to win the support of members of their ruling party.
Old dentures can be stained and unsightly, but for a project raising money for charity, they’re a potential gold mine. The Japan Denture Recycle Association started in December 2006 and so far has recycled 30 000 dentures, generating 18-million yen ( 500) for charity.
Japan’s Agricultural Minister attempted to hang himself amid a scandal over his use of official funds, media reports said on Monday. Toshikatsu Matsuoka (62) was unconscious and his heart had stopped, public broadcaster NHK reported. Japanese police could not immediately comment.
Delegates to talks on disarming North Korea’s nuclear programme voiced their impatience on Wednesday that the negotiations remained stalled over a dispute on when $25-million of Pyongyang’s funds will be released from a Macau bank. Planned group talks were called off on Tuesday.
A packed commuter train jumped the tracks in western Japan on Monday and hurtled into an apartment complex, killing 54 people and injuring more than 417 others. Investigators are focusing on whether excessive speed or the actions of the inexperienced driver caused the crash.

The death toll from Japan’s deadliest typhoon in more than a decade rose to 77 on Friday as rescue workers digging through sludge from mudslides and flooded rice paddies found 14 more bodies. Typhoon Tokage, the record eighth typhoon to hit Japan this year, ripped through the country earlier this week with high waves and rapid mudslides.
