Zimbabweans grapple with spiralling prices

The Zimbabwe state airline doubled its fares on Monday and the cost of a new passport went up thirty fold. Spiralling prices also saw restaurant and bar prices double over the weekend. A new spate of price increases in the crumbling economy dealt a further blow to official efforts to combat black-market dealing.

Cosatu rejects call for Mbeki to step down early

The Congress of South Africa Trade Unions (Cosatu) on Monday rejected calls for President Thabo Mbeki to step down as president of the country in the event African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma is elected party head in Polokwane. Cosatu will oppose Mbeki ”stepping down before his term of office expires,” it said in a statement.

Negligence costs Health Dept millions

Negligence or malpractice at public hospitals has cost the Health Department millions of rands in damages awards over the past few years, Minister of Health Manto Tshabalala-Msimang has said. However, such cases are rare exceptions to the usually excellent care provided, she said in a written reply to a parliamentary question by Gareth Morgan of the Democratic Alliance.

Ageing stars put Sri Lanka on top

Muttiah Muralitharan shattered the world Test-bowling mark and Sanath Jayasuriya excelled with the bat as Sri Lanka took charge of the first Test against England on Monday. Sri Lanka, trailing by 93 runs on the first innings, easily cleared the deficit and ended the third day’s play on 167-2 in their second knock, a lead of 74 runs with eight wickets in hand.

New Bok coach only to be named next year

The appointment of Jake White’s successor as Springbok coach has been postponed until the president’s council meeting, which is being held on January 9. Johan Prinsloo, CEO of the South African Rugby Union, on Monday confirmed that the four candidates’ final interviews with the appointment committee will be held on January 7 and 8.

India keep victory hopes alive

Wasim Jaffer hit a brisk half-century as India kept alive their hopes of forcing a win in the second Test against Pakistan on Monday. The opener followed his first-innings 202 with 56 to help the hosts reach 141-2 in their second innings for an overall lead of 301 at stumps on the penultimate day.

China closes in on SA as world’s top gold producer

Emerging global superpower China may snatch South Africa’s crown as the world’s top gold producer this year. South Africa has thus far managed to hold on to the crown, but China, which has established itself as the world’s second-largest gold producer after seven years of continued growth, now looks set to overtake South Africa in the production stakes.
