What World Cup?

With just over 1 300 days to the World Cup kick-off, there are no signs of development in Bertrams, the run-down suburb adjoining the Ellis Park Stadium that hosts the opening event for 2010. Dilapidated and broken buildings house unemployed South Africans, refugees and illegal immigrants who pay between R200 and R1 000 rent per month, while the street corners are teeming with drug dealers who have been chased from the CBD.

High on the hog

Any South African who uses national highways or main roads in our cities will sooner or later run into a government convoy. Depending on the rank of the politician being taxied, the convoy can stretch from two to eight cars. At the last count, President Thabo Mbeki had eight. Jacob Zuma may be out of government, but he has almost as many.

Lemmer never gets The Star here in the Dorsbult. So the manne were amazed at how lekker it’s become. On the pulse and all that. This week they revealed that Mandoza’s up for the Presidency. Now there’s a plan. A boer couldn’t make a better one. And for deputy president? My vote goes to Mzekezeke instead of old shower-head.

A different reality

In all the thousands of column inches of newsprint, amid all the hours of television coverage devoted to Monday’s carnage in the schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, it was the little details that stood out. Blair: IRA campaign of violence over

The Irish Republican Army’s (IRA) violent campaign in Northern Ireland is over, British Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Wednesday, following a report into paramilitary activity that raised hopes of reviving self-rule. Northern Ireland’s ceasefire watchdog, the Independent Monitoring Commission, said in the report that it believed the IRA was no longer engaged in terrorism.

Balfour to sue e.tv

Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour will sue free-to-air channel e.tv for trespassing and invasion of privacy following a report on the burglary of his house, a spokesperson said on Wednesday. ”This follows entry of e.tv crew into Minister Balfour’s house … without his knowledge and permission,” said ministerial spokesperson Luphumzo Kebeni.

Widespread rift over same-sex marriage

The South African Council of Churches (SACC) came under fire on Wednesday for announcing a public stance on same-sex marriages amid widespread division over the matter. The SACC should have ”remained silent” and let individual churches state their positions,” said Apostolic Faith Mission spokesperson Isak Burger.

Lesotho celebrates 40 years of independence

The tiny Southern African kingdom of Lesotho celebrated 40 years of independence from Britain on Wednesday with a new national flag meant to depict peace and unity. The new flag was raised by head of state King Letsie III at midnight on Tuesday in the national stadium in front of a crowd of about 500 who turned out in extremely cold weather.
