Somali Islamists claim car-bomb attack

A senior official in Somalia’s powerful Islamist movement claimed responsibility on Thursday for a car-bomb attack near the seat of the weak Somali government, saying it hit an Ethiopian military post. The official, a senior member of the Islamists’ security branch, said the attack had killed at least 24 Ethiopian troops.

R20 000 gift for first same-sex marriage

A Cape Town-based jeweller wants to give R20 000 worth of custom-made bling to South Africa’s first legally married same-sex couple. The jeweller plans to present handcrafted and designed wedding bands in person at the couple’s wedding ceremony, Uwe Koetter Jewellers chief designer and director Johan Louw said on Thursday.

DA calls for inquiry into correctional-services tender

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Thursday called for a commission of inquiry into the tender arrangements between the Department of Correctional Services and the company Sondolo IT. ”How much more needs to be revealed before Minister of Correctional Services Ngconde Balfour institutes a serious investigation …,” said James Selfe, DA spokesperson on correctional services.

Jo’burg cops to remove street beggars

Johannesburg metro police intend removing beggars from traffic intersections, Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Thursday. ”I don’t know when, but we will remove beggars all over the Johannesburg area,” Minnaar said. He said they will load the beggars in a metro police bus and take them to the traffic department.

Clinton announces boost for Aids fight

Former United States President Bill Clinton announced an agreement on Thursday to cut prices of HIV/Aids treatments for children, making the life-saving drugs far more accessible worldwide. Two Indian pharmaceutical companies have agreed to supply antiretroviral formulations for HIV-positive children at prices as low as 16 US cents a day.

Aids report paints bleak picture for youth

Less than half of South Africa’s 15-year olds will live long enough to collect a pension, according to an actuarial report on the Aids epidemic released on Thursday. Fifteen-year-olds now have a 56% chance of dying before turning 60. In 1996 youngsters of the same age only had a 29% chance of not making their 60th birthday.

AA says no to Western Cape fuel levy

The Automobile Association (AA) will not support the proposed Western Cape fuel levy, the organisation said on Thursday. ”The Automobile Association is perturbed that the proposed Western Cape provincial fuel levy has been approved in principal by the National Treasury,” the AA said in statement.
