The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to issue a statement concerning possible action against Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, Cricket South Africa media manager Gordon Templeton said on Tuesday. Afridi is alleged to have swung his bat at a spectator after he had been dismissed for 17 against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.

The Durban University of Technology and the University of KwaZulu-Natal faced a second day of student boycotts and strikes on Tuesday. The student representative council called for the strike, claiming that management had reneged on a deal to release all 2006 exam results.

A Durban metro policeman riding a motorcycle was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident after he was allegedly forced off the road by a minibus taxi on Monday. A spokesperson for ER24, the national medical-care network, said the policeman had lost a foot.

Two tries by wing JP Pietersen gave the Durban Sharks a 17-3 victory over the Bulls of Pretoria in an error-strewn Super 14 match on Saturday. Pietersen scored once in each half in a game dominated by good defence and indifferent attack. The Sharks led 7-3 at halftime and the issue stayed in the balance until Pietersen wrapped up the match with five minutes remaining.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of historian David Rattray. While police have not officially confirmed the arrests, sources said that the arrests had taken place and more were expected shortly. Rattray was murdered last Friday at his at his Fugitive’s Drift Lodge home.

Legendary tourism personality and Anglo-Zulu War expert David Rattray was attacked and killed at his lodge at Rorke’s Drift on Juanuray 26, KwaZulu-Natal police said. His killer entered his house and fired a single shot before being ordered to re-enter the building to fire another two rounds, according to a source close to the scene.

The Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons had by Monday afternoon not received any complaints of preferential treatment for convicted businessman Schabir Shaik, its head, Judge Nathan Erasmus, said. ”I have not received any official complaints. I cannot be led by speculation by the media,” he said on Monday afternoon.

A poor crowd on Sunday saw AmaZulu play out a 1-1 draw against SuperSport United in a Premier Soccer League game at the Princess Magogo Stadium. AmaZulu were in a 1-0 lead at the interval. Bennet Mnguni, the former Sundowns midfielder, and ex-Kaizer Chiefs player Lucky Mzizi made their debuts for AmaZulu.

An incident where President Thabo Mbeki was heckled while speaking at the reburial of former African National Congress (ANC) stalwart Moses Mabhida is still being investigated, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal said on Monday. ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said the party had hoped investigations into the incident would be have been completed by now.

Police on Wednesday recovered the body of a 13-year-old girl who was apparently raped and then thrown over a cliff in Durban’s Molweni area. The police search-and-rescue unit had to retrieve Londi Mdunge’s body, which had fallen nearly 60m down a cliff overlooking the Inanda Dam.
Convicted Durban businessman Schabir Shaik will not be seeking a medical pardon, his brother Yunis Shaik said in a statement on Tuesday. This comes in the wake of a statement by the former KwaZulu-Natal chairperson of the South African Prisoners’ Organisation for Human Rights, Derrick Mdluli.

Shaik was reported to have suffered a mild stroke shortly after he was admitted to St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban.
Two security guards at a Durban railway station were shot dead and robbed of a shotgun, police said on Friday. The two men were on duty at the Zwelethu railway station in Durban’s Umlazi area on Thursday night when a group of four armed men approached them and opened fire.

The driver of a bus in which 12 people, including three children, died and 34 were injured in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday was caught driving with his blood alcohol level seven times over the legal limit last year, it has emerged. Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned, slamming into pillars under a bridge on the N3.

Fraud convict Schabir Shaik underwent explorative surgery in a Durban hospital on Monday. Shaik’s brother Mo Shaik said Schabir had undergone an angiogram at St Augustine’s hospital. Mo Shaik said the procedure was performed after his brother’s physicians had become concerned at ”swelling in the heart”.

Lawyers for Durban businessman Schabir Shaik on Friday failed to lodge papers with the Constitutional Court appealing his corruption and fraud conviction and sentence. Hearing radio reports on the possibility of papers being filed, court officials kept the general office open an extra half-hour, to 4pm.
