Security guards shoot striking workers

Two striking municipal workers were wounded when security guards fired shots in Kempton Park on Monday, Ekurhuleni metro police said. Inspector Veli Nhlapo said the two were wounded when the Red Ants (a private security firm) opened fire on the striking workers. ”One was shot in the stomach and the other one in the hand. A case of attempted murder has been opened,” he said.

SAHRC: Stamp out police brutality

Police brutality in South Africa needs to be stamped out, the South African Human Rights Commission (SARHC) said on Wednesday. The SAHRC was referring to recent raids by police on Stellenbosch night spots as well as on the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg. In the raids, police allegedly assaulted a number of immigrants and patrons.

ICD to probe arrest of Scorpions sleuth

Circumstances surrounding the arrest of Scorpions investigator Ivor Powell will be investigated, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Wednesday. ”We are investigating the matter. The decision comes after a letter of complaint was received from the Democratic Alliance,” said spokesperson Dikeledi Phiri.

Good, bad and ugly of SA’s police stations

Manenberg police station in Cape Town is one of the best-run in the country, while those at Verena in Mpumalanga, KwaMashu in KwaZulu-Natal, and Inyibiba and Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape are among the worst. These are the findings of a Democratic Alliance study highlighting South Africa’s police stations and the service they offer.
