Two striking municipal workers were wounded when security guards fired shots in Kempton Park on Monday, Ekurhuleni metro police said. Inspector Veli Nhlapo said the two were wounded when the Red Ants (a private security firm) opened fire on the striking workers. ”One was shot in the stomach and the other one in the hand. A case of attempted murder has been opened,” he said.

Police brutality in South Africa needs to be stamped out, the South African Human Rights Commission (SARHC) said on Wednesday. The SAHRC was referring to recent raids by police on Stellenbosch night spots as well as on the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg. In the raids, police allegedly assaulted a number of immigrants and patrons.
A two-year-old boy whose genitals were badly mutilated was left without medical attention for about an hour at the Kagiso police station on the West Rand, media reports said on Friday. Police said they could not transport him to a hospital because of service policy, and a member of the public took him there instead.

The release of figures showing that 830 KwaZulu-Natal law enforcement officers were under investigation would be probed, the Independent Complaints Directorate boss announced on Thursday. Patrick Mongwe said that statistics could not be released with out having been ”audited and verified”.

Many Zimbabwean refugees seek shelter at the Central Methodist church in Johannesburg’s CBD, sleeping on stairs and in passageways in the only place they can find free accommodation. Up to 1 500 refugees living on the church premises were arrested in a late-night raid last week to round up illegal immigrants.

Circumstances surrounding the arrest of Scorpions investigator Ivor Powell will be investigated, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Wednesday. ”We are investigating the matter. Corruption-related complaints about the South African Police Service surged dramatically after its Anti-Corruption Unit was shut down in 2002, according to research by the Institute for Security Studies. An average of 43 cases were lodged each year between 1997 and 2002. This shot up to an average of 125 cases each year between 2002 and 2006.
The number of deaths in police custody or as a result of police action increased by 11% compared with the same period last year, a report by the Independent Complaints Directorate revealed on Monday. A total of 698 deaths occurred between April 2006 and March 2007, compared with 621 casualties in 2005/06.

Police officers who reportedly took part in a meat free-for-all near King William’s Town last month have been cleared from any charges. The incident followed an accident in which a truck loaded with pigs overturned. Onlookers apparently then killed the pigs and police officers at the scene allegedly did not take any action.
