A group of Nobel Peace laureates sent a letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday urging the Beijing Games host to uphold Olympic ideals by pressing its ally, Sudan, to stop atrocities in Darfur. In more than four years of conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, 200 000 people have died and 2,5-million have been driven from their homes.

The guru to the Beatles who introduced transcendental meditation to the West, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, died at his Dutch home on February 5, aides said on February 6. He was said to be 91. The reclusive Indian mystic shot to international prominence when the Beatles visited him in the foothills of the Himalayas in 1968 to learn his meditation techniques.

Any attempt to use the Beijing Olympics to discredit China or force it to change policy is doomed to failure, the leading communist party newspaper said on Tuesday. The counter-attack comes amid a rough week for the Olympic organisers, who have had to admit concealed fatalities on the construction site.
