Report: Future of Cango Caves in jeopardy

The future of the Cango Caves in Oudtshoorn is in jeopardy because of uncertainty over who should run the tourist attraction, it was reported on Monday. Last week, caves manager Hein Gerstner told reporters the municipality is not interested in the caves and that the world-famous attraction is in danger of falling into disrepair.

DA calls for minister to reveal electricity supply plan

Minister of Minerals and Energy Buyelwa Sonjica must tell South Africans what her department is doing to ensure that future electricity blackouts are averted, the Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday. ”She needs to step up and reveal what the plan is over the short [one year], medium and long term,” DA minerals and energy spokesperson Hendrik Schmidt said in statement.

Report urges diplomatic solution in Iran

The consequences of future military action against Iran could be ”wholly counterproductive as well as highly dangerous”, according to a report published on Monday. The report urges the British government to engage the United States and Iran in ”face-to-face talks” to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

Pahad: Reports of terror-list names come from media

Reports that more names will be added to the United Nations Security Council list of terror suspects come from the media, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Aziz Pahad said on Monday. Pahad said he read in media reports that there had been a meeting with a ”United States senior official who did not want to be named” who said more names would be added.

Rattray killer gets 25 years in prison

A South African convicted of the murder of Anglo-Zulu war expert David Rattray was sentenced on Monday to 25 years in prison. Rattray, a friend of Britain’s Prince Charles and famous for his lively oral accounts of fighting between British troops and Zulu warriors in the 19th century, was shot dead on January 26.

UDM threatens State of Nation boycott

The United Democratic Party (UDM) will not be participating in this year’s State of the Nation debate unless it is allocated reasonable time to raise its supporters’ issues, the party’s leader, Bantu Holomisa, said on Monday. According to the UDM leader, Parliament on Monday informed him that his party has been given only one minute to participate in the debate scheduled to take place on Friday.

Instead, after leading 1-0 through a freak gift goal scored by Bernard Parker in the 40th minute, the Rabbits proceeded to complete an act of self-destruction.

Maritzburg United pushed AmaZulu FC deep into the relegation zone when they beat them 2-0 in a Castle Premiership game played before a capacity crowd at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon. United led 1-0 at the interval. United played without their top goal scorer Sandile Ndlovu who had a neck injury.

FNB to go ahead with anti-crime campaign

First National Bank (FNB) will go ahead with its anti-crime campaign but at a later date, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday. The bank withdrew its multimillion-rand initiative meant to pressurise President Thabo Mbeki into making crime prevention his first priority, apparently after meeting with security cluster leaders on Friday.

South Africa cruised to a massive 164 run victory over Pakistan in the first MTN one-day international at a packed Supersport Park on Sunday. Pakistan won the toss and sent South Africa in to bat. FNB backs down over anti-crime campaign

First National Bank has cancelled its anti-crime initiative which was designed to encourage President Thabo Mbeki to make crime his priority, the early edition of the Sunday Times reported on Saturday evening. According to the newspaper First Rand bank chief executive Paul Harris and his executive team pulled out of the R20-million campaign at 3.30pm on Friday.

Two tries by wing JP Pietersen gave the Durban Sharks a 17-3 victory over the Bulls of Pretoria in an error-strewn Super 14 match on Saturday. Pietersen scored once in each half in a game dominated by good defence and indifferent attack. Police deny plans to reduce white officers

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has denied that it intends reducing the number of white police officers. It was responding to reports of police plans to change the white-to-black ratio from one-to-five to one-to-10 in the next three years. ”Police top management outright rejects [the] rumours,” said Director Sally de Beer.
