Four men accused of the murder of South African reggae star Lucky Dube appeared briefly in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported. The accused face charges of murder, attempted hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Prominent businessman Tokyo Sexwale, seen as a possible African National Congress presidential candidate, said on Wednesday Jacob Zuma was likely to win the contest to lead the ruling party. He also denied in a radio interview media reports that he had offered to fund Zuma’s campaign.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation has been awarded exclusive rights to provide the feed at the African National Congress conference in Polokwane in December to all other broadcasters. Five SABC cameras would be allowed in the plenary hall during open sessions and would be providing ”clean feeds” and unedited material.

Three people died and a number were injured during a fierce storm in Johannesburg on Thursday, paramedics and emergency officials said. Netcare 911 spokesperson Nick Dollman said a young man was killed and two people injured by a large tree that fell over in Perth Road in Auckland Park during the storm.

A grade 10 pupil, who stabbed his teacher to death in front of his classmates, was on Monday sentenced to an effective 10 years’ imprisonment. KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Vuka Tshablala sentenced 18-year old Mazwi Mkhwanazi to 15 years, five of which were suspended.

Motorists are set to pay more for fuel during the peak holiday month of December, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Tuesday. The latest figures from the Central Energy Fund showed an under-recovery of 34 cents a litre on petrol. On diesel, it was between 31 and 32 cents a litre.

The driver of a bus that went over a cliff near Piketberg in the Boland, killing nine people, has been charged with culpable homicide, news reports said on Saturday. Actor Henry Cele, famous for his role as Shaka Zulu, died in Durban’s St Augustine’s Hospital on Friday afternoon. The 58-year old actor passed away in the intensive-care unit of the hospital, a statement released by the hospital said. He had been admitted to the hospital more than a week ago with a chest infection.
