ONE hundred new minority unions have registered under the new Labour Relations Act, Business Day reported Monday.
Despite being designed to favour majority unions, the Act has inadvertently set the stage for increased labour litigation. As a result, many new unions have been established by labour consultants and lawyers for financial gain. The LRA does not allow legal representation on the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, with the result that thgose excluded have been forming unions and employer associations in order to represent individuals or companies.
