Last-minute try steals victory for Lions

THURSDAY, 1.00PM:

THE British Lions scored a narrow 18-4 win over Border in East London in waterlogged conditions at the Basil Kenyon stadium on Wednesday. Captain Rob Wainwright rescued the team from defeat with a try seven minutes before the end of play.

Border kept up a good defence and kept the lead narrow all the way through the game, with the visitors leading 10-8 at half time. Injury-struck Lions centre Scott Gibbs was taken off on a stretcher when he broke an ankle on the muddy field. He has been flown to Cape Town for treatment from the team doctor.

Lions coach Ian McGeechan said the players on his team were very new, “What we wanted to do was to try and play some national combinations together to give us that bit of a base, but it was the worst conditions you could choose to put a new team on.”
