Black IT group gets Telkom contract

BLACK-controlled information technology group Sourcecom Technology Solutions has won a fiercely fought contest for a R65-million Telkom contract to supply Compaq hardware to the telecoms parastatal over the next year.

STS won the contract against 35 other tenders. The 100% black-owned company was formed in 1996 through the merger of Impact Integration Systems and Micro & Midrange Solutions. STS is the main operating subsidiary of 85% black-owned SourceCom group, which intends to list on the JSE within two years.

SWAZIS OK ESKOM PROJECT THE Swazi cabinet has approved construction of Eskom’s proposed 400kV powerline through Swaziland to Gencor’s Mozal aluminium smelter outside Maputo. As well as supplying the Mozal smelter, the new 400kV line will supply Swaziland’s power needs for the next 30 years. The new line cancels proposals for two separate 275kV lines, including one “interconnector” between Swaziland and Mozambique’s Cahora Bassa station. Swaziland plans to build its own 400kV line to Cahora Bassa to ensure access to alternaitve power supplies.

NEW STATE PAY TALKS GOVERNMENT and public sector trade unions began a new round of wage talks on Friday aimed at settling a dispute over salary increases for senior management positions in public service. Negotiations are expected to continue this week.
