MONDAY, 1.30PM:
SPORT and Recreation Minister Steve Tshwete is going ahead with the inquiry into the South African Rugby Football Union (Sarfu). The five-member task force, which has been investigating irregularities in South African rugby since April, will be changed into a judicial inquiry.
It is likely that former judge Mervyn King, tax lawyer Michael Katz, advocate Gilbert Macus, Gina Malindi and Sports Director-General Mthobi Tyamzashe, will form the commision.
Sarfu CEO Rian Oberholzer said this cannot be allowed to happen to the detriment of rugby or any other sporting code. “Sarfu reiterates that it has nothing to hide … history has proven the effects of government interference in sport, not only in South Africa, but around the world,” said Oberholzer. He confirmed receiving a letter from the department of sport, but “the letter did not contain any detail of evidence or allegations against Sarfu,” he said.
