Oliver Hill to face trial in SA

THURSDAY, 5.30PM

FUGITIVE fraudster Oliver Hill finally looks set to be extradited to South Africa for trial, after the House of Lords this weak refused him leave to appeal a court ruling that he be extradited to face fraud charges totalling at least R100-million.

Hill fled SA in 1987 to escape justice after his alleged manipulation of the financial rand dual currency system using forged Eskom bonds was uncovered. Hill has been held in London’s Brixton prison since June 1996, whittling away his fortune fighting the extradition efforts.

If he is extradited, Hill will be the first person to be extradited from Britain to SA since 1961. His last avenue of escape is a petition to British Home Secretary Jack Straw.
