Changes at Africa’s best read

The Mail & Guardian thanks all its (growing) band of readers for their patience during the present transformation that the newspaper is undergoing, and would like to announce some major new additions in the coming weeks.

At the end of November we will be launching Frontiers, a new weekly science, technology and computer section that will be at the cutting edge of the information age. From the Mir space station to the latest palm- top computer, Frontiers will help South Africans keep abreast of the global changes in technology. The section will replace the old PCReview monthly supplement.

In January we will be launching a new Money section, with personal finance and consumer advice for discerning readers who want to make intelligent choices with their money. It will deal with questions such as: where can you invest with a conscience? Are you tired of being ripped off on your bank charges? Are your old “struggle” newspapers worth keeping as an investment?

We have launched several new columns. Who Is …? is a weekly profile of local, African and international newsmakers. A Second Look is a weekly opinion piece which aims to take a thoughtful, fresh, non- obvious and controversial look at subjects in the news. Robert Kirby’s Loose Cannon has moved into the main section from the Friday pull-out, where it makes way for Charl Blignaut’s unconventional social diary, Cultural Sushi.

Regretfully, two old favourites, Angella Johnson’s profile column and David Beresford’s Insincerely Yours, have ended their runs, though both writers remain major contributors to Africa’s best read.

M&G arts and books editor Shaun de Waal has won a Thomas Pringle award in the review category for his literary journalism – the fifth person at the paper to receive such an award.

The English Academy of Southern Africa presents the award annually.

The judges said De Waal “wears his learning with grace and style … his writing is characterised by subtle humour, impassioned involvement in his subject and sharp perception”.

The awards will be presented on December 2.
