SANDF chief masterminded bombing

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Wednesday 3.00PM.

GENERAL Siphiwe Nyanda, the former MK Transvaal commander and current chief of the SA National Defence Force, was the mastermind behind the 1987 Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court bombing, former MK member Solly Shoke told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s amnesty committee on Wednesday.

Four policemen died and 14 other people were injured when the car bomb was set off by MK, the African National Congress’ armed wing, on May 20, 1987.

Shoke said that he had discussed the attack with Nyanda. “Nyanda came up with the idea and he outlined the concept. It was his idea, but he was not working alone. It was a commander concept,” Shoke said.

He said they discussed the planting of a mini limpet mine to get police to the scene before they would set off the bigger car bomb by remote control. “The main bomb was detonated by remote control as police were getting closer to it,” Shoke said.

The hearing continues.
