TCL BID HOTS UP

THE bidding contest for copper mining firm Namibian Tsumeb Corporation Limited is continuing, with a Namibian company insisting that it remains in the running for the lucrative copper mines. Namibian bidders — Namibia Mining and Processing (Pty) Limited, formerly Namibia Base Metals — offer to buy TCL for N$360-million remains on the table and is backed by available foreign financing. Australia-based Metals and Mining Corporation of Namibia is due to make a technical presentation on its plans for the TCL mines. Its N$146,75-million bid got the nod of approval from TCL’s provisional liquidators on February 9 when one of the six provisional liquidators, Ian McLaren, wrote to TCL creditors and recommended the Australian offer as Namibia Base Metals had, in the provisional liquidators’ opinion, not proven that it had the money available to pursue its bid.
