ZIMBABWEAN authorities arrested three United States citizens at the weekend, allegedly trying to smuggle an array of weaponry out of the country, police said on Monday. The police officer in charge of criminal investigations, Flavian Makwara, was quoted by Ziana news agency as saying the men were arrested after a customs security baggage check at Harare international airport detected the weapons, which included some 14 rifles and pistols. The three, whose names have not been released yet, were found in possession of seven revolvers, seven rifles, including an AK-47 assault rifle, in addition to several telescopic sights and binoculars and two way radios. Makwara said the trio arrived in the country on Friday from the Democratic Republic of Congo and were picked up on Sunday night trying to leave the country with the arms. They are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
